Thank you for visiting Sybil.biz. We are dedicated to promoting awareness of dissociative identity disorder through the artwork and life story of Shirley Mason, better known as Sybil, the pseudonym under which her story was told. The life story of Shirley Mason, told under the pseudonym, Sybil, garnered international interest and scrutiny. The 1973 book, Sybil, written by Flora Rheta Schreiber in collaboration with Dr. Cornelia Wilbur, was a national bestseller. A movie by the same title was released in 1976. Mason's story is the story of a woman who triumphed over impossible odds. Horrifically abused throughout her young life, the mind of Ms. Mason protected the innocent child by splitting into various dissociative states or "personalities" to absorb the experience and memories of various repeated acts of abomination. Sixteen personalities were identified over the course of Ms. Mason's eleven year sojourn through psychotherapy with Dr. Wilbur.
We hope to spread the word of Ms. Mason's unique life by making her artwork available to be viewed on this website and by producing high-quality reproductions of her work for you to enjoy in your own home. We hope you will explore these selections from the Hidden Collection of art We would also like to encourage you to visit Sybil's Friend, a website maintained by Nancy Preston who knew Ms Mason for over 25 year. |
